http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic - The Food and Nutrition Information Center
The Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC) is one of several information centers at the National Agricultural Library (NAL), part of the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS). You can access all of FNIC's resource lists and databases, as well as many other food and nutrition related links from this site.
The food and human nutrition materials at the NAL consist of books, journals, and audiovisuals covering a broad range of topics from children's literature to technical nutrition information. The NAL has an on-line catalog of its collection called ISIS (Integrated System for Information Services). The NAL also publishes a bibliographic database called AGRICOLA (Agricultural On-line Access), which contains over 3 million citations. AGRICOLA is available for search and retrieval through commercial vendors. Some land-grant universities and other sites also have access to AGRICOLA.
http://www.fda.gov - Food and Drug Administration
FDA ensures that the food we eat is safe and wholesome, that the cosmetics we use won't harm us, and that medicines, medical devices, and radiation-emitting consumer products such as microwave ovens are safe and effective. FDA also oversees feed and drugs for pets and farm animals. Authorized by Congress to enforce the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and several other public health laws, the agency monitors the manufacture, import, transport, storage, and sale of $1 trillion worth of goods annually, at a cost to taxpayers of about $3 a person. The site also includes information regarding numerous topics. Among those of specific interest are the following:
- Biotechnology
- Code of Federal Regulations
- Food Labeling
- Food Safety
- Nutrition
http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov - Center for Food and Safety and Applied Nutrition
The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), regulates $240 billion worth of domestic food, $15 billion worth of imported foods, and $15 billion worth of cosmetics sold across state lines. This regulation takes place from the products' point of U.S. entry or processing to their point of sale.
CFSAN is one of six centers within FDA. The center promotes and protects the public health and economic interest by ensuring that:
- Food is safe, nutritious and wholesome, and cosmetics are safe.
- Food and cosmetics are honestly, accurately and informatively labeled.
- Revamping food labels to make it easier for consumers to get nutrition information about the foods they eat.
- Approving certain health claims supported by scientific evidence showing a link between a food or nutrient and a disease or health condition. These health claims can be used in food labeling.
- Establishing new regulations based on modern food safety techniques to improve seafood safety.
Additional information available on the website includes biotechnology, food additives and premarket approval, foodborne illness and the Bad Bug Book (Foodborne Pathogenic Microorganisms and Natural Toxins), food labeling and nutrition as well as consumer advice, Federal/State food programs, industry assistance and many other topics of interest.
http://www.foodsafety.gov - National Food Safety Information Network
FoodSafety.gov is a gateway website that provides links to selected government food safety-related information. Not every government web site is listed. When more than one government web site provides similar information, links will be provided to only one or two of those sites. A steering committee consisting of individuals with different backgrounds reviews all potential sites for inclusion on the FoodSafety.gov web site. This web site is part of the National Food Safety Information Network. It is maintained by FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.
